Papers relating to the research and production of Walsh's book San Jose State University : an Interpretive History include correspondence between the Office of the President of SJSU, project editor Carol Beddo, and a number of reviewers and friends Walsh contacted during 1997-2003. Early and revised drafts are included with editing marks of both the reviewers' and Walsh's comments. Source materials include notes, newspaper clippings, manuscript documents, photocopied inter-office announcements and short unpublished histories of campus departments. The published volume is in carton 1, folder 1.

James P. Walsh was born in 1937 in San Francisco, California, the younger of two sons of Irish immigrant parents. Walsh's career spanned 35 years at San Jose State. During that time, he served as Chair of the History Department (1982-86), Associate Dean of the College of Social Sciences (1987-1988), Dean of the College of Social Sciences (1988-1994), and Academic Vice President [renamed Provost] (1995).
